About the Home Health Care Market

Home Health Care MarketingMedicare defines home health care as “a wide range of health care services that can be given in your home for an illness or injury. Home health care is usually less expensive, more convenient, and just as effective as care you get in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF).”

The National Center for Health Statistics reports that there are 12,200 home health care agencies in the U.S. (2016 data as reported in mid-2020). The majority of these home healthcare companies (80.6 percent) are operated on a for-profit basis. Millions of patients receive home healthcare services annually, including 4.5 million for the latest reporting period of 2015.

The home health care field is growing rapidly. Industry revenue of $103 billion in 2018 is expected to grow by 7 percent annually to $175 billion by 2026, according to the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC).

Patients can receive home heath care services as part of their Medicare benefits, or through a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy or other health insurance coverage.

Doctor’s orders are needed to start home health care, and the doctor’s office or a hospital discharge planner generally will provide a list of qualifying home health care agencies. For this reason, referrals are a crucial part of the home health care marketing campaign.

Home health care patients can receive many types of services, including wound care for pressure sores or a surgical wound, intravenous or nutrition therapy, and injections. Home health care aides also provide “stand-by assistance” and monitor any serious illness or chronic health condition.
